The Media Discourse Analysis of the Normalization of Relations Between Israel and Arab States
Berková, Kristýna ; Volný, Vít (advisor) ; Lochovský, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the normalization of relations between Israel and the Arab states (with an emphasis on the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain) during 2020. By means of a suitable theoretical framework it aims to shed light on the reasons for establishing official diplomatic relations and, using critical discourse analysis, to compare media images of the countries and identify the form of the fifth geopolitical code. An analysis of 60 news articles subsequently shows that Bahraini, Emirati and Israeli reports portray the agreement as a path to peace and stability and highlight new economic opportunities. On the other hand, the articles differ primarily in their interpretation of the question of Palestine and the Iranian nuclear threat. Key words: Israel, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, normalization, critical discourse analysis
British reaction to the Arab Spring events in the context of United Kingdom's relations with Persian Gulf countries
Fričová, Kateřina ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis named British reaction to the Arab Spring events in the context of United Kingdom's relations with Persian Gulf countries is concerned with an impact of the revolutionary events of 2011, known as the Arab Spring, on bilateral cooperation between United Kingdom on one side and Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman on the other. While using quantitative analysis approach, it depicts how the Persian Gulf developments were reflected by prominent British representatives and members of the Cameron coalition government. Since the government promised to approach foreign policy matters through a liberal-conservative lens and also planned to further deepen its relations with Persian Gulf countries, the Arab Spring events can be interpreted as a clear dilemma for British policymakers. This thesis aims to answer whether such dilemma forced the government officials to re-asses the traditionally warm attitudes towards Persian Gulf and additionally, it demonstrates which spheres of their cooperation were threatened the most. Firstly, the bilateral relations between United Kingdom and Persian Gulf countries between 1971 and 2010 are described. Then, the focus moves towards the Cameron coalition government and its foreign- policy aims. In its final part, the thesis focuses on British...
The Influence of the Arab Spring on US-Saudi Relations
Pánek, Robin ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Bečka, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the influence, which the events of the Arab Spring had on the relations between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It examines the events of the Arab Spring in four countries, which are important both for the Arab Spring itself and thanks to their specific relations to both observed states. The countries are Tunisia (where the events of the Arab Spring first started and from where they began to spread to other countries of the Arab world), Egypt (long-time partner of both the United States and Saudi Arabia in the region), Libya (first country, where was undertaken a foreign military intervention with the participation of the United States regarding the Arab spring) and Saudi Arabia itself (where the protests were appeased, but from where a military intervention against neighboring Bahrain was launched). Apart from a chronological account of the events, part of the thesis is also an analysis of the stances of both observed states on these events. Comparing these stances, the thesis aims to show how big an influence the potential differences in stance had on mutual relations between the United States and Saudi Arabia. In the case of the stances of the United States, the thesis uses the freely accessible press statements and speeches of the...
Factors shaping reaction of the Obama administration to the events of the Arab Spring in Bahrain
Skupa, Marek ; Anděl, Petr (advisor) ; Hornát, Jan (referee)
Year and half after president Obama in Cairo announced a new beginning of relations between USA and the Middle East, the region was seized by turmoil which posed challenge for American foreign policy. The Obama administration decided to react on a country-by- country basis. In Egypt, they demanded transition to democracy and declared responsibility of the Egyptian government. On the contrary, in Bahrain they only called for dialog and demanded stability instead of democratization. The reason is that Bahrain is vital ally of the US in the Middle East and instability in the country would threaten US interests. Preservation of the current regime in Bahrain is also vital for Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Both of these allies urged the US to curtail its criticism of Bahrain. The US had to take attitudes of its allies into consideration, especially because their mutual bilateral relation recently deteriorated. Futhermore, there is also an unclear role of Iran in the whole Bahrain's turmoil and Iran could utilize possible changes in Bahrain. The US influence on Bahrain is on top of that limited by local political situation, which empowers conservative and more antiamerican faction of royal family.
Iran and Saudi Arabia as regional powers in the Middle East
Kartalová, Petra ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the relationship between two regional powers in the Middle East - Iran and Saudi Arabia. Middle East is a conflict-prone region with a delicate balance of power. We work with the assumption that a specific combination of internal and external factors caused the rise of Iran as a regional power. The balance of power in the Middle East has thus changed and Iran has started to pose a threat to Saudi Arabia that needs to be balanced. First, we analyze the theoretical concepts of power and region in international relations and subsequently we propose a definition of a regional power. The theory of balance of threat by Stephen M. Walt is used as a framework for the analysis of the Iranian threat. Last chapter of this thesis is devoted to three case studies. Here, we analytically describe particular examples of Iranian threat and its balancing by Saudi Arabia in Bahrain, Yemen and Lebanon.
